Heirloom Versus Hybrid

It has come to my attention since beginning to blog a few months ago, that there seems to be a movement amongst gardeners to plant heirloom vegetables as opposed to hybrids.  I can not say that I fully understand all the pro’s and con’s, but from what I do understand, it seems like a good idea.  My newer seeds are heirloom seeds, however, early in the spring of 2010 I purchased some hybrid pepper seeds from Gurneys.  They were Gurney’s Sonora II Hybrid Pepper Seeds (hot peppers) and Gurney’s Giant II Hybrid Pepper Seeds (bell peppers).  I must tell you, that I have never been harvesting peppers in late October before.  But,then again, I don’t think I have ever paid much attention to my garden past August. Is my pepper success due to the seeds, the gardener, or both that I do not know.  I’ve seen some great looking gardens out there in the blogosphere and I’m wondering what varieties of heirloom peppers have you planted that preform this well?

Since I have all these peppers, I am always looking for recipes to use them in.  This weekend it was chili.  I use my sister in laws recipe, and insert whatever I have fresh from the garden.  Head over to  Greenish Thumb for some other great garden to table ideas.

  1. That’s a good question Charlotte. I only used hybrid seeds for peppers this summer as well, and I still have plants pumping out peppers. Next year, I decided to go the heirloom route, because I’m also curious about the differences in growing the two. From what I understand, one of the main advantages of growing heirloom is that you can save the seeds year after year, and preserving the history of the seed. Being able to save seeds I think it’s a great pro for growing heirloom.

  2. Congrats on your pepper harvest. I’ve had success with both heirloom and hybrid, but do think it’s worthwhile to preserve the seeds of the past…the ones that haven’t been tampered with.

    My peppers are still producing like crazy – which is actually pretty crazy since almost everything is done.

    All my peppers are heirloom. I use Baker Creek as a seed source. I really have no comparison though as I’ve not grown other types. I must have the pepper magic though b/c peppers do well for me when all else fails!

  4. I am allergic to peppers (to eat them) but have always grown hybrids. This was my first year growing heirloom tomatoes and I will never grow a hybrid again. These were disease free, and very tasty. The farmer who sold them to me did not know the variety, but I will visit him again next year for sure.

  5. Egg Creams are a very New York thing. Supposedly it was first created in Brooklyn New York. It’s very popular here in diners and ice cream shops mostly.

  6. Hi Charlotte, Hybrid versus non hybrid is definitely a hot topic. As for me I want anything that will do well in my vegetable garden-usually hybrids here.

  7. Hi Charlotte, I have limited experience with growing vegetables, but I can say that modern varieties of vegetables are frequently not nearly as tasty as older varieties. It seems to me that it is a good theory that the heirloom variety you planted has a greater resistance to cool fall temperatures. I bet the chili with your homegrown peppers is delicious.

  8. We’re growing mostly heirloom species now, but have grown numerous hybrids in the past. I think some like to grow heirlooms just for the variety and diversity in the garden. If you’re a seed-saver, you avoid hybrids because the offspring most likely won’t resemble the parent plant. So you never know what you’ll get with a hybrid. Even with heirlooms though, there’s no guarantee what you’ll end up with in regards to seed, as some species, including peppers and squash, will cross readily with other varieties in the garden, unless you take the take the time to prevent the ones you want to save for seed from crossing. I agree, it is late to harvest peppers, we just pulled ours at the end of last week to make room for some winter crops!
